Warwick — Each winter, alone in the ice deserts of Antarctica, deep in the most inhospitable terrain on earth, a truly remarkable journey takes place as it has done for millennia. It is the “March of the Penguins,” the yearly event documented on the film directed by Luc Jacquet and narrated by Morgan Freeman. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Warwick Valley Community Center at 11 Hamilton Ave. in Warwick. The community center has a Sony theatre system with a 19 foot screen, which the Warwick Film Group uses to offer screenings on the first and third Saturday of the month. In the Antarctic, every March, the quest begins to find the perfect mate and start a family. The courtship will begin with a long journey - a journey that will take them hundreds of miles across the continent by foot, in freezing cold temperatures, in brittle, icy winds, and through deep, treacherous waters. They will risk starvation and attack by dangerous predators, under the harshest conditions on earth, all to find true love. The film documents one year in the life of an Emperor penguin flock, and one couple in particular, as they trek across the Antarctic. The film is rated G. As part of the film group’s independent and foreign films, the screening will be shown one hour earlier than usual, and offered to mature children for a $3 donation. The adult donation is $5. Coffee, hot chocolate, brownies and popcorn will be available for a dollar.
