Central Valley - The Monroe-Woodbury District Art Show and Art Scholarship Auction will be held the weekend of May 2-4, featuring the work of students ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade. A highlight of the show is the portfolio presentations of senior art majors, whose range includes paintings, prints, computer animation, photography, ceramics, sculpture, video productions, drawings and graphics. The opening reception is Friday, May 2, 5:30-9 p.m. in the High School lobby. The artwork also will be available for viewing on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. The ninth annual Art Scholarship Furniture Auction also takes place Friday, May 2, at 6:30 p.m. All chairs and tables are hand-painted by senior art majors, drawing and painting students and district art staff. Each piece focuses on historic artistic styles or masterpieces of various artists. All proceeds will benefit the scholarship program for graduating seniors. The public also is invited to participate in the “Empty Bowls” project during the Art Show. Participants create ceramic bowls and then serve a simple meal. Guests choose a bowl to use that day and to keep as a reminder that there are always empty bowls in the world. In exchange for a meal (ice cream) and the bowl, the guests give a suggested minimum donation of $10. The proceeds will be given to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley. This project is a joint effort involving the Art Department and the Art Guild. Proceeds from of the sale of hand-painted chairs and tables will benefit the scholarship program for graduating seniors.
