Local groups win county arts grants

— County Executive Edward A. Diana announced the recipients of the 2013-2014 County of Orange Arts Grants, an annual program in its 11th year. Twenty-one awards were given in amounts up to $5,000 to organizations, municipalities, businesses and individuals in the county for their publicly accessible arts programs and projects.

Included in the grant winners are the Warwick Dance Festival and Bertoni Gallery for its "Sundays in July" music art and poetry festival.

This cycle included two grantees that were given the top award of $5,000:

Newburgh Heights Association, Inc. - Heights Banners Beautification Project

Orange Regional Medical Center - Fabled Forest Mural in ORMC's Pediatric Center

The 19 remaining awards support projects in Orange County spanning many artistic disciplines, all open and accessible to the public. They include:

Tango under the Tent, Inc. - Argentine Tango Show and Instruction

Mid-Hudson St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, Inc. - 38 Annual Mid-Hudson St. Patrick's Parade

City of Middletown (Paramount Theatre) - Paramount Opera Project

Melissa Padham - Warwick Dance Festival

Funding for the grant program is provided by Diana and the Orange County Legislature to support the positive economic, aesthetic, and expressive influence of the arts in local communities. The program is administered by Orange County Tourism, a division of the Orange County Department of Planning.

Recommendations of grant recipients are made by a panel comprised of individuals from the arts and business community who live or work in Orange County and who are independent of county government.
