Library to host program on endangered Revolutionary War sites on March 3
WARWICK — On Sunday, March 3 at 1 p.m., Albert Wisner Public Library will host Julie Griffin of the Friends of Griffin's Tavern and the Friends of Fishkill Depot to present about these significant archaeological sites, their importance to the mid-Hudson during the Revolution and the continuing efforts to protect them from destruction.
Griffin's Tavern in East Fishkill was the rendezvous for patriots such as Washington, LaFayette and Von Steuben, near the main supply depot for the Continental Army.
The tavern was the home of Colonel Jacob Griffin, a leader of the Dutchess Rombout Militia. It was at Griffin's Tavern the New York Committee of Safety in the summer of 1775.
The Tavern’s remaining structures and archaeological site are unprotected.
The Fishkill Supply Depot's surviving area, which includes barracks foundations and documented gravesites, is the subject of an ongoing preservation effort.
This important post for the Army is threatened with commercial development despite overwhelming evidence of its archaeological resources and importance to our understanding of the war for Independence and of America's first Veterans.
