Library offers neurofeedback expert next Monday

WARWICK — Dr. Calvin Hargis, a board certified chiropractic orthopedist with post graduate studies in neurology, will be presenting a talk on neurofeedback at the Albert Wisner Public Library in Warwick, on Monday, May 20, at 6:30 p.m.
Hargis will discuss its history, development and the latest research concerning its various applications.
Mapping stimuli
Neurofeedback, he explained, begins with a comprehensive brain mapping of the brain’s electrical waves as the patient interacts with auditory and visual stimuli while data from the mapping is fed into a sophisticated software program. Once the mapping is complete an analysis of the wave formation is compared to normative data that has been compiled over many years to see if the wave patterns are consistent with the subject’s symptoms and pathology.
Neurofeedback therapy for ADD/ADHD and other brain related conditions was recently endorsed by the American Pediatric Association as a “Level 1” treatment for ADD/ADHD
According to Hargis, the great majority of ADD/ADHD children and adults treated with neurofeedback show dramatic improvement in attention span as well as scholastic and cognitive performance. Furthermore, most individuals are able to eliminate or significantly reduce their medication for those conditions.
Other applications
Neurofeedback, he added, has also been found to be of benefit for other brain related disorders such as anxiety, panic attacks, OCD, Asperger’s, autism, memory loss, chronic pain, drug and alcohol addiction, migraine headaches, PTSD, insomnia, depression and traumatic brain injury to name just a few of it’s applications. The changes brought about by neurofeedback are usually permanent.
This talk will be open to the public. Hargis also gives periodic talks about neurofeedback at his office at 40 Maple Ave. in Warwick.
