Learn how to build a trail
Bear Mountain Workshops on basics of trail maintenance and construction will be held this Saturday, Oct. 14. One workshop will be held at Fort Decker in Port Jervis with instructor Jakob Franke. Another will be held at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Westchester County with instructor John Magerlein. Both start at 8:30 a.m. Participants will learn the basics of building and maintaining hiking trails and then put their skills to work by volunteering to care for a section of trail. The workshops are sponsored by the New York - New Jersey Trail Conference. Conference club and individual members and non-members interested in acquiring or upgrading a working knowledge of basic trail maintenance or other advanced skills are welcome. The workshops include lectures indoors and field work on hiking trails in the vicinity. Take-home materials and a participant certificate will be provided. This is recommended as a family or group activity. Individuals are also welcome. The cost is $5 for Trail Conference members, $8 for non-members, which will be credited toward first year membership dues if they join the Conference at the workshop.
