Latin-American music mixes with Chopin
Middletown Pianist Hector Martignon will play Latin-American and European classical and contemporary music at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, Orange Hall Theater, located in Orange Hall at the corner of Wawayanda and Grandview Avenues in Middletown. The theater is located on the campus of Orange County Community College, which is celebrating Latin American Heritage Month. Martignon will play works by Fulgencio Garcia, Ignacio Cervantes, and Egberto Gismonti, as well as Frederick Chopin and Claude Debussy. He paid for his studies with Robert Bohnke, Rosa Sabater, and Klaus Huber at the prestigious Freiburger Musikhochschule in Germany by performing with Afro-Cuban and Brazilian bands in Europe. He backed stars like Celia Cruz and Ismael Quintana on their European tours, and recorded with Tata Güiness and Arturo Sandoval. At the same time, he was performing classical music in recitals and concerts in Germany, Italy, and his native Colombia. In addition, he studied with Solomon Mikowski at the Manhattan School of Music and has played and recorded with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra. Now living in New York City, he is on the faculty of Lucy Moses School of Music and the Special Music School at the Kaufman Center. Tickets are available at the student activities counter in the George F. Shepard Student Center, located on South Street at East Conkling Avenue. Tickets are $8 for adults; $6 for faculty, staff, and alumni; $5 for senior citizens; and free for students and children. Group rates are available.
