WARWICK - Bring chairs. It’s the last of the free summer concerts at the Railroad Green Village Park for this season. And, if past performances are any indication, it’s also likely that Dick Wells and “The Fun Bunch,” a traditional “Big Band,” will draw a large crowd on Sunday, Sept. 9, at 3 p.m. Admission is free. Since mid-June, numerous free summer concerts have been held at the Railroad Green. The appearance of Wells and “The Fun Bunch” big band is not only the grand finale of the free concert series but is also expected to mimic previous big band events by turning into a huge “block party” with friends and neighbors, all in a festive mood, coming together to enjoy the music. The concert is scheduled to run two and one-half hours. Wells, who always manages to arrive at each performance with a fresh repertoire, plans to sing 15 songs, including such favorites as “New York-New York,” “Night and Day” and “That Old Black Magic,” a song Wells sang with the world-famous Harry James Band in Las Vegas. Wells also is known locally from his radio programs on Warwick/Florida station WTBQ (1110 AM). In addition to singing with Harry James, Wells sang with the Sammy Kaye orchestra and has also appeared on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show. The Fun Bunch big band plans to pay special tribute to Count Basie, a leading figure of the Swing era in jazz. One member of the band is recording artist Philip Jones, a well-known tenor and bass trombonist. He is an 18-year veteran of the Grammy-winning “Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass” orchestra. He has worked with Bing Crosby, Elves Presley, Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Willie Nelson as well as dozens of famous groups and orchestras as well as recording hundreds of top label releases in his role as a studio musician. Everyone is invited to find a good spot to place their lawn chairs on the Railroad Green or enjoy refreshments and seating at one of the nearby outdoor restaurants.
