Kennett Dance Studio to present The Nutcracker'

Goshen Kennett’s Dance Studio will present “The Nutcracker” on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m., and on Dec. 10 at 3 p.m., at the Paramount Theatre in Middletown. Marya Kennett’s dance students have been busy rehearsing for their annual performance of this classic Christmas ballet, which she refers to as an excellent “first ballet.” Kennett established the Marya Kennett Ballet Theatre, a not for profit ballet company, in 1979, in order to offer dance to the community. She first produced “The Nutcracker” 25 years ago. This first production was just a presentation of excerpts from the ballet, since the young ballet theatre did not have the money or resources for a major production. That performance and several more after it were done at the Middletown Junior High School. Each year the company added to their costumes, props, and music, creating a more elaborate presentation as years went on. These additions were made possible through numerous fund-raisers, such as bake sales, candy sales, penny socials, table sales, booster ads, and Nutcracker proceeds. The company is run by parent participation, and all the proceeds go into future performances. About fifteen years ago, the production was moved to the Paramount Theatre, which was just beginning the process of refurbishing its facilities. That is where the production remains today. Each year there’s excitement as the younger students try out for the parts of Clara, Fritz, and the party children. The youngest dancers audition for angels. The company students are given parts in variations. When asked why she’s continued to do “The Nutcracker” for all these years, Kennett replied, “It’s tradition.” Tickets are available at 845-346-4195. Adults, $17, children/seniors $13.
