Hudson Valley artist to present painting demonstration

Middletown Orange County Community College will host a Master Class/Demonstration presented by Laura Moriarty, entitled Encaustic Painting Technique, at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9. in Room 115, Harriman Hall. Encaustic paints are wax based and produce vivid colors. It is a type of paint that dates back to ancient times. The soft consistency of the pigment sticks allows the paint to be heated easily, with the aid of electricity. Heating adds a new dimension because the paint can be moved and the image changed. Laura Moriarty, who is an encaustic painter and printmaker, will demonstrate how encaustic paints are applied directly to a surface from pigment sticks without the use of brushes. Harriman Hall, which is universally accessible, is located at the corner of Wawayanda and East Conkling Avenues, Middletown. This Lyceum event, which is free and open to the public, is made possible by Cultural Affairs.
