History expert on Civil War-era women's life to speak at round table
Newton, N.J. Juanita Leisch Jensen, an expert on the subject of Civil War civilians, will be guest speaker at the Colonel Henry Ryerson Civil War Round Table scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at One College Drive in Newton, N.J., in the theater located in the “D” Building, on the campus of Sussex County Community College. Jensen wrote “An Introduction to Civil War Civilians and Who Wore What: Women’s Wear, 1861-1865,” which has become standard reference work in the field. She is an avid collector of photographs, clothing and artifacts related to Civil War civilians, which she makes available to museums and for special research projects. She served as guest curator for two 3,000-square-foot exhibits at the National Civil War Museum, and currently has objects on loan and on display at the Daughters of the American Revolution Museum in Washington, D.C. She is president of the Society for Women and the Civil War, and serves as mistress of ceremonies for the Conference on Women and the Civil War. She is a member of the Company of Military Historians, which honored her for her contributions to the field of military history by naming her a fellow in 2007. The Colonel Henry Ryerson Civil War Round Table provides educational programs, tours, and fellowship for people interested in the Civil War era. The program is free and open to the public.
