Pine Island — The Drowned Lands Historical Society in Pine Island will hold a discussion of the interesting geology in the Black Dirt region at a gathering in the Pine Island Park on Thursday, July 21. Anyone interested - and particularly children with rock collections - are invited to bring their rocks and minerals for identification by graduate geologist Brian Pahucki. A minerals collector, he will talk about the “amazing geological history and interesting minerals in the Pine Island area.” The event will be held from 6.30 to 8.30 p.m. at the pavilion in the Pine Island Park on Treasure Lane. At a similar event held by the society last summer, the public was shown outstanding collections of local fossils and arrowheads, as well as antique agricultural tools and artifacts.
