Sugar Loaf — John Jordan’s photographs of the people and landscapes of the Indian Himalayan region provide a visual representation of the rich culture of this remote area. The photographs can currently be seen from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, at the Lycian Centre for the Performing Arts Gallery on King’s Highway in Sugar Loaf. A reception for the exhibit will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11. The exhibit will be available for public viewing until Saturday, Feb. 25. The photos were taken in the Himachal Pradesh state of northern India during Jordan’s travels to the remote Himalayan region in July 2001. The images, both black and white, and color portfolios, offer a feel for the terrain and people in the mostly Buddhist communities. Without running water and electricity for three weeks, Jordan camped and traveled through the rugged mountainous landscape, in vehicles that averaged 10 or 15 m.p.h. Jordan has taught photography at West Milford High School in West Milford, N.J., for almost 30 years. His work has appeared in books, magazines and periodicals, and has been shown in galleries and museums. He is a past recipient of the artist and educator grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and has written articles for Ilford Photo’s “Photo Instructor,” an international magazine. In discussing his exhibit, Jordan commented, “Close inspection of anything will reveal something worthy of capture, to a sharp eye and enlightened soul. Traveling throughout the world has provided me an opportunity to experience nuances of many cultures. In the process, I have become a more literate and sensitive person, with a truer understanding of our new global society. It is my hope that my images will serve in a positive manner, allowing each culture to maintain what makes it unique, yet permit all to recognize each other.” His website can be visited at www.photojordan.com.
