Greenwood Lake Public Library announces programs for February

GREENWOOD LAKE — The following is a list of programs and events at the Greenwood Lake Public Library:
Independent Film Night
Monday, Sept. 12.
The 1934 film, "It Happened One Night," tells the story of a spoiled heiress running away from her family who is helped by a man who is actually a reporter in need of a story.
Winner of five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Writing, Adaptation, the Frank Capra film starred Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert.
Food preservation
Thursday, Feb. 15, 6:30-8 p.m.
Greenwood Lake Public Library presents Master Gardener Marion from the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County with a program that will focus on food preservation. Whether it is preserving last season’s harvest or purchasing locally grown fruits or vegetables, canning, freezing and drying can be effective ways to serve foods that taste harvest-fresh at a later date.
Accompanied by a slide presentation, the master gardener will demonstrate and educate participants on the tested guidelines for safely preserving foods by these methods.
Advanced registration is required.
The Bob Wylde Quartet
Sunday, Feb. 18, 1 to 2 p.m.
The quartet currently consists of Bob Wylde on his guitar, joined by Jed Levy (sax), Thomson Kneeland (bass), and Eliot Zigmund (drums).
Wylde has collaborated with many diverse artists, including Marty Elkins and bassist Mike Richmond - a 30-year veteran of Stan Getz’s band.
Saxaphonist Levy has appeared at several international jazz festivals as well as leading bands at such New York venues as Sweet Basil, Blue Note, Birdland, Visiones and Zinno.
Bassist Kneeland was commissioned to write pieces for the Longy School of Music Jazz Ensemble and has arranged for the Sherman Chamber Ensemble. He has performed internationally at such venues as The Newport Jazz Festival, The Kennedy Center, Medellin University in Colombia, the Toronto Jazz Festival, the Perth Jazz Festival and the Vancouver Jazz Festival.
Drummer Zigmund studied at Mannes School of Music and City College of New York. He spent some years in California performing, eventually moving back to the tri-state area. He has worked as a session player for Neil Sedaka, Dionne Warwick, and The Pointer Sisters. A resident of Teaneck, New Jersey, Zigmund has taught at William Paterson College and New York University.
February’s concert will consist of mainstream jazz, compositions from the 40s 50s and 60s, with composers such as Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Artist of the month
Greenwood Lake Public Library’s Art Gallery presents the work of local artist Chris Van Vooren for the month of February.
Van Vooren is primarily a self-taught artist who has resided in Greenwood Lake for the past 17 years. His medium of choice is acrylic paint but has been known to dabble in other mediums such as pastels and mixed media.
As a local resident, Van Vooren has immersed himself in contributions to the village. He is the lead volunteer coordinator at the Greenwood Lake Coalition teen center. Under his supervision, Van Vooren has expanded the teen center hours as well as brought an art component to the children of Greenwood Lake.
On Saturday, Feb. 24, Van Vooren will be at the library running two art programs for kids:
• Creating a Picture on Canvas (11 a.m. to noon, ages 9 and under); and
• Self Portraits (12:30 to 1:30 p.m., ages 10-17).
Van Vooren has been a board member of the Greenwood Lake Chamber of Commerce for two years and was just elected vice chairman.
His village projects include the Greenwood Lake Mural at Sunshine Park and the Greenwood Lake film strip project, which helped raise money for the teen center during the Hoboken International Film Festival.
Van Vooren also painted the entire 40-foot long backdrop for Greenwood Lake Theatre's production of The Wizard of Oz. He has just begun collaboration with Windermere Studios to bring paint nights to the public with a systematic instructional class on acrylic paintings.
