Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra hosts “Bring the Kids” family concert on Jan. 14

    Newburgh — The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra, directed by Woomyung Choe, will host a “Bring the Kids” family concert on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 3 p.m. in Aquinas Hall on the campus of Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. Erich Tusch, who has performed as bass soloist for the Greater Newburgh Symphony and other orchestras, will instead narrate the newly authored verses to accompany Georges Bizet’s “Jeux d’Enfants” (Children’s Games) by vocalist and author Holly Weiss. Violinist Jina Choi and violist Nancy Wegrzyn are the soloists in Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra,” which was composed when Mozart was around the age of some of the students who are expected to among this audience. Also on the program will be the “Overture to Die Fledermaus,” which is described by the orchestra as the crown jewel of Viennese operetta by Strauss. After intermission, the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform “Die Fledermaus Overture” by Johann Strauss Jr. The title of Die Fledermaus, meaning “The Bat,” refers to the costume worn by one of the characters (a very different kind of “Batman”) at a masked ball in this favorite comedy. The musical performance will close with the drama-filled catchy “Khachaturian Masquerade Suite.” Following the final curtain, there will be a meet the author program with Weiss, whose historical novel, Crestmont, is now available. Following the concert, theater-goers will have an opportunity to meet with the author, whose historical novel, “Crestmont,” is now available. Ticket prices are $25 for reserved seating, $20 for general admission, $15 for seniors, $10 for students, and children under seven are admitted free of charge.
