Get your plants at Warwick Valley Gardeners sale

PINE ISLAND — After a long, hard winter, members of the Warwick Valley Gardeners have finally been able to get out to their gardens and are busy dividing their perennials for the annual plant sale.
The plant sale will be held on Saturday, May 31, at the Pine Island Park Pavilion on Kay Road, Pine Island, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.
Featured will be a large variety of member-grown plants as well as nursery grown perennials, annuals and herbs. This year’s theme is “Plant for Pollinators.” The diminishing monarch population and the collapse of bee hives are of particular concern. Because of the use of herbicides, milkweed is being destroyed. This is the only plant that provides nutrition for the larvae stage of the monarch butterfly.
There are also many plants that provide nectar for butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. Information about plants to attract pollinators will be available. Master gardeners from the Cornell Cooperative Extension will be on hand to answer questions. The park has plenty of parking and a playground area.
Proceeds from this sale will go to the continuing programs of the club, such as planting and maintaining nine gardens throughout the town and village, Garden Therapy at Mt. Alverno, Railroad Green Holiday Project, Arbor Day and presenting educational programs for the community.
