Salisbury Mills - Four original Red Cross posters, created by John Fleming Gould (1906-1996), have been donated to the American Red Cross in Greater New York, the Bethlehem Art Gallery has announced. According to Robert Gould, one of the artist’s sons, the posters represent three years of Red Cross activity using models from Orange County, N.Y. Roland Harriman was the national chair of Red Cross during the 1950’s and met with artist Gould in Washington, D.C., for the preview showing of the posters. The framed artwork is now on display at the new Red Cross headquarters at 520 West 49th St. in Manhattan. The American Red Cross in Greater New York is a humanitarian partner and key participant in New York’s plans and programs to help the nine million people in New York City and Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Sullivan counties prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Robert Gould, son of the artist, is chair of the advisory board of the Orange County chapter of the group. The year 2006 is the centennial of John Fleming Gould’s birth, and art exhibits commemorating this event are currently in progress. The Lycian Centre for the performing arts in Sugar Loaf is now featuring “70 years of Art” exhibiting original Red Cross art and other posters.
