Freedom Quilts'
Highland Mills - Author and Civil War re-enactor Trish Chambers will present the “Legend of Freedom Quilts and the Underground Railroad” this coming Sunday, March 18, at 3 p.m., as part of the Woodbury Public Library’s “Woodbury Reads” program. Chambers will appear in period dress at the Highland Mills library branch and use a facsimile of a “Freedom Quilt” to make this era in history come alive. Included will be the use of quilts as a method of teaching slaves how to survive while seeking freedom as well as the African tradition of “story cloths,” the meanings and instructions represented by various quilt patters and the similarity of the lessons in the quilt patters to the lessons taught in slave songs (spirituals). This program is appropriate for families. There will be door prizes and refreshments. Call 928-2114 or 928-6162 to sign up. This event in the finale of the library’s “Woodbury Reads” program. This year, the book selected for the townwide reading progra was “North Star Conspiracy” by Miriam Grace Monfredo. The story takes place in the 1850’s and involves a story of the Underground Railroad in upstate New York.
