MONROE —Tiger Schulmann’s Mixed Martial Arts of Monroe/Woodbury will host a free bully prevention seminar for children and parents on Saturday, April 19, at noon and 1:30 p.m. at Tiger Schulmann’s in the Harriman Commons shopping center. “Being bullied can be devastating to a child,” said Sensai Montes, head instructor. ”And out of embarrassment, most kids never tell their parents about it. No child should have to be subjected to the fear and trauma associated with bullying. Our seminars are specifically designed to empower kids to be able to stand up for themselves, to not be afraid and to be confident enough to repel and discourage bullying.” The seminar will focus on teaching children basic bully prevention skills through interactive skits, demonstrations and crowd participation for both children and adults, all conducted by the Tiger Schulman black belt instructors. These educational activities will teach children how to avoid and discourage bullying, what to do when encountering a bullying situation, how to communicate bullying situations to teachers and family, how to handle physical confrontations and how to be confident in a non-aggressive way. Parents will also be coached on how to identify signs that their child is being bullied, how to keep the lines of communication open on the subject of bullying and will be provided information on bullying resources. This event is part of the Tiger Schulmann’s “Childsafe Program,” established in 1992 to teach awareness about child safety in local communities, and to encourage communication between parents and children about these issues.
