— February is Black History Month, and throughout the month, the Florida Public Library will be hosting special programs and guest speakers celebrating the accomplishments and contributions of African-American people.

Drummer Kazi Oliver
On Sunday, Feb. 3, from 1 to 2 p.m., African drummer extraordinaire Kazi Oliver will lead a workshop in African drumming. He will bring an assortment of African drums and other percussion instruments for participants to learn about and play. Families with children in grades K and up are invited to join the fun and bring a drum if they have one.

Oliver has been teaching and performing throughout the Hudson Valley for 25 years with the Kazi Oliver Drummers and Dancers, an ensemble of performers from this continent and from Africa. Oliver’s educational style promotes cultural awareness and a sense of community.

Janus Adams
On Monday, Feb. 25, from 2:30 to 4 p.m., Janus Adams, an Emmy award-winning journalist, author and creator of BackPax children’s media, will present her program on the Underground Railroad for Tweens and Teens.

Kids will follow the freedom train in history through books and audio, learn about secret codes used by escaping slaves, and discover hidden passageways for escape while playing “Steal Away,” Adam’s original board game.

Adams is a former talk show host and NPR correspondent. She has also made frequent appearances on CNN, FoxNews, and the Today Show. Her works have been published in Essence and Ms. magazines, The New York Times, Washington Post and USA Today and she founded Harambee, the first national book club for African American literature.

Her BackPax has received numerous accolades including the Parents’ Choice Gold Seal Award for innovation in children’s media. She was the first African-American publisher featured by Children’s Book of the Month Club.
