Florida - September is library card sign up month and all new cardholders will be eligible for a prize drawing at the Florida Public Library’s 48th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 30. The Friends of the Library will hold a used book sale from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. A scarecrow judging contest for all ages will be featured at noon. Make a scarecrow (any size) at home with family, friends or your team or scout group. Bring it to the library by 11:30 a.m. for judging. The top three scarecrow creators will win prizes. Library cards will be presented to new cardholders in kindergarten and everyone is invited to have refreshments to celebrate the library’s birthday. • The celebration continues on Sunday, Oct. 1, at noon with part two of the popular Florida: “Then and Now” presentation by members of the Florida Historical Society. Bob Scott will show historical postcards of local scenes and photos of the same places today. Newcomers and long timers are all invited to make their best guesses about the pictures and put in their two cents in a lively discussion. At 1 p.m., Friends of the FPL will sponsor an antiques appraisal session with expert John Fish. Bring your mystery object (portable size only) and have its value appraised for $5 or three objects for $10. • Volunteers interested in working on the book sale are asked to contact Friends president Donna Dellatto at 651-2636. Teens are invited to help earn community service hours by setting up and breaking down the sale. Letters verifying hours worked will be issued to each student.
