Florida Public Library announces summer programs

FLORIDA — Florida Public Library’s annual summer reading program begins with a kick-off party for all ages featuring the Spoof Gabbling Circus on Monday, June 27, at noon in the Seward Senior Center next to the library at 4 Cohen Circle.
Each attendee must register in advance and have a ticket for this event.
Before or after the party, kids may register for the summer reading clubs and sign up for upcoming summer programs that run through the month of July.
Children read on their grade level and receive weekly prizes.
Registration is required for both the summer reading club and all summer programs.
The reading club and programs are open to residents of the Florida School District. Residents from outside the district may register for programs as space allows.

Sign up for the kick-off party and reading clubs is in-person only at the library. Stop in the library today and pick up a Summer Reading Brochure, which also lists every program this summer. This year’s New York State theme is "On Your Mark, Get Set … Read!"

Mondays

Miss Meg will lead a variety of programs for school-aged kids. Mondays at FPL will feature two sessions for the All Stars (children who have completed grade K-3.) They will meet at 10:30 a.m. or 3:30 p.m. when the program is repeated. (The library is closed Monday, July 4.)

Tuesdays

On Tuesday, Tweens (children who have completed grades 4 and 5) will meet at various times each week, as will the Teens (for grades 6 and up.)
Check the online calendar or the brochure for weekly times.
Program sessions include learning how to juggle, tie-dying, 3D printing, a newly released movie, cooking programs and timed challenges and games.
Teen volunteers will supervise Pop-Up Crafts every Tuesday for families who visit the library between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Children under 6 must be accompanied by an adult.

Thursdays

On Thursdays, summer programs for preschoolers with Miss Sara are scheduled. The Li’l MVPs (age 18-35 months) will meet at 10 a.m. for fingerplays, felt-board fun, read-aloud favorites and simple crafts. A parent or other adult must accompany all children. Please make other arrangements for siblings.
At 11 a.m., the MVPs (age 3-5) will meet for fun on their own, although special storytimes with music, cooking and animals on several dates do require a parent or caregiver’s presence.
Special events include visits from Dusty the READ dog on various dates, a visit from the popular ScienceTellers, a craft recycling day, a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, a magic show and a family matinee.
The 20th Annual Campfire Storytimes at Glenmere Lake on Thursdays, July 7 and 21, will feature members of the Black Dirt Storytelling Guild telling stories for the whole family.

Fridays

Fridays are Exercise Your Mind Day and kids are invited to drop in between noon and 2 p.m. for board games, coloring, logic puzzles and more. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.

Weekly program

FPL will provide a weekly program on Thursday afternoons at the Village of Florida’s summer recreation program. These sessions will feature books, games and crafts related to the summer theme.
Miss Maria will also visit Florida ABCD weekly to bring bilingual programs and summer reading logs and prizes to Spanish-speaking preschoolers.

Adults

Adult programs will take place on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m., and include:
Essential Oils on July 6;
Make a Mermaid Bottle on July 13;
The Art of Meditation on July 14;
Farm to Table Summer Salads on July 20; and
Zentangle on July 27.
The Knit & Crochet Circle will meet on Monday, July, 18 at 6 p.m.
A Poetry Café on Friday, July 15 at 7 p.m. will feature poets Christopher Wheeling, Tara Yetter and Robert Milby.
The Page Turners Book Club will be reading "Our Souls at Night" by Kent Haruf and will have its wrap-up party with prize drawings on July 28.

Ice cream social

On July 29 at 6 p.m., The Friends of the Florida Library will sponsor an ice cream social with music by the Uncle Brothers Band.
Come on down, bring the entire family and your lawn chairs, enjoy free ice cream and great music.
Children who have met their reading goal may pick up a free book and there will also be awards and prizes.

Amazing Orange scavenger hunt

FPL will also participate in the Orange Library Association’s Amazing Orange scavenger hunt based on the TV show “The Amazing Race.”
Library patrons are encouraged to form teams and meet a series of challenges that involve visits to other Orange County libraries and attractions, posting on social media and answering questions about libraries.
The program runs from July 5 to Aug. 12, so get your team together (a team can be an individual) and get in the game.
Teams that complete the hunt are eligible for a prize drawing that will award $200 gift certificates to Eisenhower Hall, the Galleria and the Castle Fun Center.
