Florida library host program on sign language and the culture of the deaf

FLORIDA The Florida Public Library will welcome Lisa Montanaro on Thursday, June 28, at 6:30 p.m.,for a presentation on deaf culture and an introduction to sign language.
Montanaro has been an instructor and interpreter, having recently interpreted Hands of My Father: A Hearing Boy, His Deaf Parents, and the Language of Love, a book by Myron Uhlberg about the hearing son of deaf parents.
Montanaro also is well-known in the Warwick area as a motivational speaker and owner of LM Organizing Solutions, LLC.
This is a subject near and dear to my heart, as I have deaf cousins and spent three years as an instructor and interpreter at the NY School for the Deaf from 1991-1994, Montanaro writes on her Web site (www.decidetobeorganized.com). I also taught sign language for many years at my local community center and was privileged to be the interpreter for a wonderful book called Hands of My Father.
During the program at the library, Montanaro will introduce the manual alphabet, finger spelling and basic conversational vocabulary. She will also speak to common myths about deafness in order to help raise awareness about the deaf community.
The program is open to adults and teens over 16 only. The library encourages patrons to attend the program to get started with American Sign Language or brush up on current skills.
