Florida library celebrates 48th anniversary this weekend
Celebration will include book sale, scarecrow contest, history and antique appraisals Florida - A number of special anniversary programs will be offered this weekend as the Florida Public Library celebrates 48 years since it first open its doors: The weekend’s events will begin and end with the Friends of the Florida Public Library’s annual used book sale at the Seward Senior Center, next to the library, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 1. Fiction, non-fiction, romance, western and children’s titles will all be on sale in hardcover and paperback formats at prices ranging from .50 - $1 each. DVDs and CDs in like-new condition are priced at $1 each. On Saturday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m., view the library’s Scarecrow Contest entries on display on the back deck. Judging based on creativity will begin at noon and prizes will be awarded. Immediately following, there will be a presentation of brand new library cards to the youngest library patrons in grades K-5 and prizes will be awarded to the winners of our Library Card Signup Month drawing. During the month of September, anyone who signed up for a new library card was entered into the prize drawing. After all cards and prizes are awarded, everyone is invited to have refreshments and a piece of anniversary cake made by local baker Janet Picarelli. On Sunday, Oct. 1, at noon, Bob Scott of the Florida Historical Society will present part two of “Florida in Postcards, Then & Now.” Using a slide show presentation, Scott will show old postcards of local scenes and then photos of the same places today. Finally, from 1 to 3 p.m., expert John Fish will be on hand for antique appraisals. Bring your treasured object (portable size only) and have it appraised for $5, or 3 objects for $10.
