SUGAR LOAF — The Orange County Land Trust will hold two outdoor events this May: its Wild, Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk on May 17 and a Meteor Shower Watch on May 24.

Plant walk
Wild, Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Moonbeams Nature Preserve, located at 219 Prosperous Valley Road in the Town of Wallkill.

This event is appropriate for all ages and levels of experience and knowledge.

The Land Trust’s expert foraging guide will identify spring greens, nuts, berries, fruits, wild flowers, herbs and other plants that grow in the wild and are edible, have medicinal value are decorative and/or poisonous.

This may include dandelions, plantain, sorrel, purslane, lamb's quarters, burdock, pokeweed, milkweed, assorted mustards and mints, cattail, jewelweed and many others.

As this event involves walking through fields, participants are advised to wear long pants and socks and apply bug repellant.

Comet Linear
The Orange County Land Trust will host a Meteor Shower Watch on Satuday evening, May 24, at Deerfield Farm Preserve, located along Route 52 in the Town of Montgomery, near the intersection of Jeils Road.

That evening, Comet Linear is expected to produce a strong display of shooting stars (according to NASA, it could result in a meteor storm producing between 100 and 400 meteors an hour).

Deerfield Farm Preserve, which consists of wide-open farmland with expansive views of the northern sky; should make for the perfect location to witness this meteor shower.

Due to the unpredictable nature of these occurrences, this outing may be cancelled should the predictions change.

The event will also be cancelled in the event of excessive cloud cover or rain.

Participants are advised to bring a flashlight for walking out to the site.

Essential information
Cancellations for either event will be recorded at 845-469-0951 ext. 12 the morning of the event. A rain date for the Wild, Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk has been set for Sunday, May 18.

A donation of $5 per person or $10 per family is suggested for each event, with all proceeds benefiting the stewardship of the Land Trust’s protected lands.
