Eat, drink and be merry - circa 1776 at Baird's Tavern this Saturday
Warwick - Travelers will be able to sample food and beverages as they were served in colonial times as part of Tavern Night at Baird’s Tavern on Saturday, February 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. Sponsored by the Historical Society of the Town of Warwick, the event is open to the public. Tickets at $20 per person at the door. A highlight of the tavern offerings will be porter - George Washington’s favorite beer - brewed from an authentic recipe by David Sherfey of Pine Island. Hard apple cider from Applewood Winery and Port Wine from the Warwick Valley Winery also will be served as will fresh cider from Ochs Orchard. Claire Pettit, a senior at Warwick Valley High School, a local fiddler and step dancer, will be entertaining with traditional Cape Breton, Scottish and Irish tunes on the main level of the building. Members of the Garden State Black Powder Association will be demonstrating various hands-on colonial day tasks throughout the tavern in full costume. Local restaurants and chefs have donated their time and talents, such as beef stew from Yesterday’s Fine Foods and Spirits, shepherd’s pie thanks to Halligan’s Public House, loaded potato scones courtesy of Charlotte’s Tea Room and Ed Fava will warm the heart with chicken pie. “It is the society’s wish for this event that all the senses be touched and that those attending will truly be transported back to 1766 when Francis Baird erected the limestone tavern building,” said Sybil H. Skinner, director. Baird’s Tavern is at 105 Main Street, across from the post office. For information, call the tavern office at 986-3236.
