Day for the Earth' targets global warming
Beacon Hudson Valley residents who want to put the brakes on global warming can find out how to do their part locally at “A Day for the Earth,” to be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at The Tabernacle of Christ Church, located at 483 Main St. in Beacon. Guest speakers and musicians will raise awareness of global warming and its effects on the Hudson River Valley, encouraging residents to take action with specific local activities. Musical performers will include Guy Davis, Linda Richards, Pete Seeger and his grandson, Tao Rodriguez Seeger. Professor Nicholas Robinson, founder of the Environmental Legal Studies program at Pace University School of Law and a renowned specialist in international environmental law, will provide an international perspective on global warming. Cold Spring resident Ellyn Rosenthal, who has formed Local Yokels for Local Activism, will speak about how to reduce our carbon footprint. Excerpts from a new film, “Silent Snow,” will be shown. The film shows how climate change and pollution from industrialized nations, including Hudson River PCBs, affects the Inuit communities of Greenland. “A Day for the Earth” is part of an international day of recognition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali, meeting Dec. 3 to 14, to create an international accord to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which is set to expire in 2012. The new accord will set strict guidelines for curbing carbon and implementing alternative energy solutions. The event in Beacon is sponsored by the Climate Crisis Coalition and locally by the Hudson Valley International Day for the Earth Committee, Clearwater, the Beacon Sloop Club, the Mid-Hudson Progressive Alliance, the WESPAC Foundation, and Philipstown for Democracy.
