Dancing Under The Stars' concert at West Point
West Point The United States Military Academy Band continues its popular Music Under the Stars concert series at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 19, at West Point’s Trophy Point Amphitheatre. The Academy Concert Band, under the direction of Lt. Col. Timothy J. Holtan, will perform a program of well-known dance pieces, as well as obscure gems of the repertoire. Attendees are encouraged to bring a pair of dancing shoes to West Point’s Trophy Point Amphitheatre, to dance within view of the Hudson River. The concert is free and open to the public. Those listeners acquainted with wind band repertoire will recognize Norman Dello Joio’s “Satiric Dances,” as well as Robert Russell Bennett’s “Suite of Old American Dances.” Those more familiar with symphonic repertoire will encounter Peter Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz” from “Sleeping Beauty” and Johann Strauss’s “Polka Francaise” from “Die Fledermaus.” Fans of Academy Band vocalist Sgt. 1st Class MaryKay Messenger will enjoy her vocal talents on “Moonlight Memories,” arranged by Dwayne Milburn. Sgt. 1st Class Barry Morrison will showcase his euphonium expertise on John Hartmann’s “Facilita.” Those who enjoy a more exotic style to their dances will enjoy Leroy Anderson’s “Blue Tango” and Reinhold Gliere’s “Russian Sailors’ Dance.” Allow extra travel time for the 100% vehicle and photo I.D. inspection at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates.
