Czech composer and pianist to teach, perform at SUNY Orange

    Middletown - Tomas Svoboda, professor emeritus at Portland State University in Oregon and in his youth during the 1960s one of Czechoslovakia’s most important young composer, will lecture, conduct a master class and give a piano recital at the SUNY Orange campus in Middletown next week. Svoboda composed and had his first symphony premiered at age 16. In the mid-60s, his family moved to the United States where he enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Southern California. His schedule at SUNY Orange is: • Thursday, Sept. 21, 7:15 p.m. Morrison Hall, first floor. Svoboda will give a lecture: “Music - the Precious Memory. The Basis of One’s Connection with Music.” • Friday, Sept. 22, 10 a.m. Orange Hall, Room 23. Svoboda will give a master class entitled: “Communication Between a Composer and the Audience.” • Sunday, Sept. 24, 3 p.m. Orange Hall Theater. Svoboda will perform “Music from Bohemia” in a piano recital. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and alumni, and free for all students.
