Cornwall-on-Hudson The Cornwall Grail Center presents Washingtonville High School Senior Lena Cheney leading a discussion on “International Trafficking of Women and Children” on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. The center, located at 119 Duncan Ave. in Cornwall-on-Hudson, is owned and operated by The Grail, an International non-governmental organization of the United Nations committed to spiritual search, social action, ecological sustainability and the release of women’s creative energy throughout the world. Cheney is a senior at Washingtonville High School studying international business and public affairs. Through the Grail, she actively participates in the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women conferences, focusing on issues related to women and girls. Upon graduation in June she will continue to pursue her passion for international affairs through college studies and international experiences. For her presentation on Jan. 17, she will use photos sand video, combining fact and statistics with stories of those who have first-hand experience of what is modern day slavery. The work of activists who advocate on their behalf will also be discussed. This presentation is the result of independent research Cheney has conducted since 2010 as a participant in conferences at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She created it to raise awareness of this issue, along with information about how to combat it. It is the first time she is offering this work outside of school. Donations accepted at the door.
