Come rain or come shine,' Dick Wells and Philip Jones Jazz Quartet croon Warwick Winery

WARWICK - As promised, it was sold out. Dick Wells and the Philip Jones Jazz Quartet played to a packed house on Thursday evening, Oct. 5, in the Café at the Warwick Valley Winery. The repeat performance, which earned a standing ovation, followed on the heels of two previous sold-out events held last year at Warwick’s Landmark Inn. Pané Bakery Café co-owner/chef Michael Dimartino, who also owns the Landmark Inn, and his partner Katherine Grizzanti offered patrons a full course gourmet menu served with local wines including the award winning selections produced at the Warwick Valley Winery. Philip Jones, recording artist, well-known tenor and bass trombonist, treated the crowd to his popular and credible imitation of the immortal jazz musician Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong. Jones is a 17-year veteran of the Grammy winning “Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass” orchestra. And as a performer, Jones has worked with many of the most talented entertainers in show business including Bing Crosby, Elves Presley, Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Willie Nelson as well as dozens of famous groups and orchestras. He has also recorded on hundreds of top label releases in his role as a studio musician. The award-winning trombonist appears on Dick Wells’ popular CD, “Here’s to the Band.” Wells, who once sang with the world famous Harry James orchestra and even appeared on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show, has performed on Las Vegas stages with legendary entertainers like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. On Oct. 5 he thrilled the audience with what everyone agreed were superb renditions of oldies such as “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “The Lady is a Tramp,” and “I’m Confessin’ That I Love You.” This was Wells’ first appearance at the Pané Bakery Café. “I love the venue and the acoustics are great,” he said. “And everyone I spoke to afterward, said the food was fantastic.”
