Middletown — Applications are being accepted for the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra’s fifth annual Concerto/Aria Competition, which will determine musical and vocal soloists for the orchestra’s Spring Concert on May 5, 2007. The competition is open to SUNY Orange students and Orange County high school students. A panel comprised of music faculty from SUNY Orange will judge auditions for the instrumentalists and vocalists from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007. In case of inclement weather, auditions will be held during the same time frame on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007. Students must complete and submit an application by Monday, Dec. 11. The length of the performance piece should be between 10 to 20 minutes. Music composed prior to the 1850s will be accepted automatically as an audition piece, as long as it has a published and available orchestral accompaniment. Literature composed after the 1850s will also be considered, but needs prior permission from Dr. Hilarie Clark Moore, director of the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra. Vocalists will be allowed to perform more than one aria, if desired, and instrumentalists may perform one or more movements of a concerto. Each applicant must bring his/her own accompanist.
