College offers course on MySpace, YouTube
NEWBURGH A noncredit course about the Web sites YouTube, MySpace and Facebook will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Jan. 22, 24 and 29 at the Desmond Campus at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh. Vince Kayes, professor of mathematics and computer science, will discuss the uses, benefits and dangers of these Web sites. MySpace and Facebook are social networking sites, and YouTube is a video-sharing site. They are open to everyone and Kayes will discuss how various trades and nonprofit organizations can benefit. Kayes will emphasize security and how users can avoid giving information that could lead to identity theft, a concern for both adults and children. Parents concerned about their child’s use of these sites have options for monitoring their child’s participation and even restricting access to certain pages. “Kids are so technically aware,” Kayes said. “Parents should become a little more familiar with the sites and see what’s going on.” Kayes is a regular instructor of Learning Is Forever Enriching courses at the college, which are open to those 55 and over. The course fee is $40. For more information call Jennifer Laubach at 569-3563.
