Chamber Music Series offers clarinet choir
West Point The clarinet section of the United States Military Academy Band will present a recital of music for clarinet choir at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26, in the Eisenhower Hall Ballroom. The choir will perform the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Strauss Jr. and Peter Schickele. The most widely played and popular of Mozart’s works for orchestra, “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, K. 525,” dates from 1787. It was a crucial period for Mozart, as Don Giovanni was composed that year, along with two of his finest string quintets. Sgt. 1st Class John Parrette has arranged the composition for clarinet choir. Strauss’ “Gypsy Baron Overture” was written in 1885. Strauss is commonly known as the “Waltz King,” and the overture was one of the only operas he composed. Michael Boone made the arrangement for clarinet choir. Composer Peter Schickele wrote “Monochrome III.” Schickele, who is more commonly known by the name “P.D.Q. Bach,” is very much a serious composer, and spent several years in residence at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Md.
