West Point — The United States Military Academy Band will present a concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, at West Point’s Eisenhower Hall Theatre. The Concert Band, under the direction of Lieutenant Colonel Timothy J. Holtan, will present Celebrating America’s Heroes in honor of Armed Forces Day. The performance is dedicated to the members of the United States Military Academy graduating class of 1956, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Major Dwayne Milburn was commissioned by the class to compose a march for the occasion. His composition, “Steadfast Leadership,” will be premiered at the concert, and will also be performed at the Graduation Parade. Milburn served for twelve years as a conductor in the Army band program before leaving to pursue advanced degrees in conducting and composition at University of California in Los Angeles. James Hosay’s “Black Granite Symphonic March” will also be performed. The work is dedicated to the soldiers who served in the Vietnam War. The title refers to the black granite wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Also featured will be “Symphonic Prelude” by Mark Camphouse, an inspiring work based on the composer’s recent visit to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Collevill-sur-Mer in France. The concert will be a tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Allow extra travel time for inspections at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates.
