Celebrate George Washington on July 29
WARWICK — The Friends of Hathorn House will hold a "We don't need your stinking tea!" party, highlighting the 18th-century colonial trade war, on George Washington Day, July 29, at Lewis Park from 2 to 4 p.m.
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the 1768 Nonimportation pledge, a "Liberty Tea" table will offer samples of various herbal alternatives to black tea that were used by patriots as they turned away from foreign goods.
The "Buy Local, Eat Local" movement has deep roots in American history; colonials boycotted imported products as a means of social protest, resorting to such dramatic acts as dumping tea into Boston Harbor.
Using items such as homespun fabric was one way the 13 colonies began to see themselves as one community, one nation.
George Washington Day is a free event of the Warwick Historical Society and features many family-friendly activities each year in collaboration with The Friends of Hathorn House.
The 2018 "Tea Party" is sponsored by the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area.
