Bridget Cirbes to teach Crewelwork at the Greenwood Lake Public Library in March
GREENWOOD LAKE — Bridget Cirbes from Sewing the Blues joins “Nights of Nee-dlework” for the upcoming March sessions (March 5 and 19) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Greenwood Lake Public Library.
Cirbes' focus will be in the resurging art of Crewelwork. Crewelwork (embroidery or tapestry done with crewel yarn on linen cloth) has reappeared in today’s home décor in drapery, pillows and wall art.
Originally from Alabama, Cirbes opened Sewing the Blues in December 2001. Located in a converted church, the shop began by selling items handmade from old denim jeans.
Cirbes started meeting with artists and bringing in their handmade jewelry from around the world to the village residents. Her homemade baby bibs also became a popular item and local artists, such as Ping Xu Moroney, have displayed their work in the store.
The beautiful window storefront has attracted significant attention through the years, celebrating the seasons and displaying positive sayings and quotes on Cirbes' beloved blackboard.
For the first week, March 5, she will teach a number of basic crewel embroidery stitches. The library will provide the necessary materials to get participants started. The first 10 participants will receive their own crewel kit to take home with them.
At the following meeting on March 19, Cirbes leads the group in creating their own personal artwork using the simple techniques that are the foundation for the age-old needlework medium.
Last October, “Nights of Nee-dlework” was added, with meetings the first and third Tuesdays of the month, to complete the list of ongoing monthly clubs in adult programming.
Cookbook Club with Carol meets the second Tuesday, 6:30-8 p.m., and Book Lovers’ Club with Pat meets the fourth Tuesday, 7-8:30 p.m.
