Breast cancer walk scheduled for October

Woodbury Thousands of Hudson Valley residents, including breast cancer survivors and their friends, are expected to join the fight against breast cancer by walking in the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walkathon at Woodbury Common Premium Outlets on Sunday, Oct. 15. Since 1993, “Making Strides” has been the cancer society’s most important annual event, dedicated to raising money for breast cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. Since 1972, the walkathon has raised more than $295 million for research. The American Cancer Society says the walk will also be an opportunity to educate women about the importance of early detection and to help reverse what it says is the “alarming decline in the number of women going for their potentially lifesaving annual mammogram.” This year more than 110 “Making Strides” walks will be held throughout the country in October, with an estimated 400,000 walkers expected to participate. Last year, 400,000 participants nationwide helped to raise more than $34 million, according to the organization.
