'Bohemian Rhapsody' opens 2017-18 concert season for Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra on Oct. 28

NEWBURGH — The Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra begins its twenty-third year and second season under the leadership of Maestro Russell Ger with a concert titled “Bohemian Rhapsody” on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Mount Saint Mary College.
“The October program offers a wonderfully vibrant start to what is certain to be our finest season yet,” Ger noted in the press release announcing the performance. “Each piece reflects in its own way aspects of the irrepressible energy and whimsy of the unique area of Bohemia in what is now the Czech Republic.
“Brahms’ ‘Violin Concerto in D Major’ is famous for demanding great technical feats from the soloist,” Ger added, “and we have a wonderful soloist in Filip Pogady. But the concerto doesn’t dazzle for its own sake. It communicates Brahms’ characteristic passion and fervor. Then Brahms’ ‘Hungarian Dance No. 5’ is an effusive gypsy dance that is totally Bohemian in its inspiration and style.
“If Brahms had a gift for erecting great sonic structures, Dvorak’s gift was for mellifluous melody,” Ger continued. “His tunes are steeped in the folk music of his beloved homeland and flow effortlessly, one after another, until they burst in torrents of joy and beauty. His Eighth Symphony is as irresistible a piece as was ever composed.”
“Bohemian Rhapsody” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at Mount Saint Mary College's Aquinas Hall (arrive at 6:30 p.m. for the concert preview by Gordon Shacklett).
