At West Point: Not your grandfather's trumpet recital
West Point The United States Military Academy Band will continue its Chamber Music Recital Series with a solo trumpet performance by Staff Sgt. Denver Dill at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 12, at West Point Jewish Chapel. The recital will showcase selections such as “Not Your Grandfather’s Trumpet Recital,” and use unconventional accompaniment to explore a myriad of emotions, including anger, sadness and joy. After opening the performance with Hans Werner Henze’s three-movement work “Sonatina,” Dill will perform two works with CD accompaniment, “Strap on your Lobster” and “Getting Waxed.” These comedic pieces are part of a larger five-movement work entitled “Icarus Wept.” Dill will then be joined by fellow U.S.M.A. Band trumpeters to perform three duets. The recital will conclude with “Born to Beat Wild,” featuring the unique combination of trumpet and bass drum. The recital is offered free to the public. Allow extra travel time for inspections at Stony Lonesome and Thayer gates. Due to changing security requirements, call 938-2617, or check www.usma.edu/band before leaving for the recital.
