Arts and Crafts on display during January

WARWICK — Displays of both arts and crafts will be exhibited throughout Albert Wisner Public Library during January.

The Winter Expressions, a community art show, is on the main level of the Library and features works by 32 Hudson Valley artists. The show, which runs to March 19, includes oil paintings, watercolor, photography, mixed media and pencil drawing.

On Thursday, Jan. 24, from 7 to 8 p.m., the library will host a “Meet the Artists” for the artists exhibiting in the show. The public is cordially invited to attend.

During January, the members of The Warwick Doll Crafters Guild will be exhibiting their “Art Dolls” in the display cases on the lower level. Many of the group (some local and others come from as far as Connecticut and New Jersey) have had their work featured in various doll-related publications.

Some of the dolls displayed are hand-sewn from an elaborate mix of fabrics and textures while others are skillfully sculpted from various contemporary paper clays making the show an eclectic mix of styles and techniques.

The Guild’s founder, Lillian Alberti, started the group last winter in order to share her love of doll making and was delighted to find many other like minded “free spirits” willing to join in on the fun.

The group meets regularly at the library to work on projects or to teach various creative techniques not just in doll making but in paper and other media-crafts. For information about the artists or questions about joining the group please contact Lillian at lillian@a-lil-whimsy.com

Transfer Technique Works created by Jacinthe Battaglino are on display in the gallery on the lower level. In conjunction with the display, Battaglino will conduct a free transfer technique workshop for those interested in learning this easy method of using photocopies, newspaper or magazine images to create artwork, cards and more.

The workshop will be held on Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. Registration is required.

The Great Broadway Theaters at the library

WARWICK — The Albert Wisner Public Library will present “Behind the Bright Lights: The Great Broadway Theaters” on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 6:30 p.m.

This event is made possible through Speakers in the Humanities, a program of the New York Council for the Humanities. Speakers in the Humanities lectures are made possible with the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

With three-quarters of a century of history behind them, the 40 surviving Broadway theaters stand as works of art in themselves, as well as monuments to the lively history of American theater. Many were built as lavish headquarters for Broadway’s great impresarios, who spared no expense in their decor.

The Belasco Theater, designed for self-styled “Bishop of Broadway” David Belasco, boasts Tiffany glass, paneled wooden ceilings, and murals by the New York Ashcan School artist Everett Shinn.

The host for the evening is Anthony Robins, an historian specializing in New York City architecture and history, has lectured for museums, universities, and private groups around the world.
