Florida - Stop in or call 651-7659 to sign up for the following spring programs at the Florida Public Library: Programs for Kids in Grades K-5: Books and Beyond is a drop-in program on Tuesday afternoons at 4 p.m. for kids in K-5. On April 17, the topic is dogs. Learn how dogs communicate with each other and with humans. And on April 24, tell stories about cats. Do they really have nine lives? No registration is required for these drop-in programs. On Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m., welcome spring with Miss Maria. Decorate a flower pot. Listen to books about special storybook gardens. Programs for young adults: YA Discovery is a program on Tuesday evenings for young adults in grade 6 and up. On April 17 and 24, the “ABCs of Money Management” will begin at 6 p.m. for teens. Learn to make smart financial choices for your future. Bring the free workbook provided to each session. On Saturday, April 28 at 2 p.m., the library will provide a small cake for each young adult who signs up for its cake decorating class. Learn the basics of decorating a cake for holidays and other special occasions. Have your cake, decorate it and eat it, too. Programs for adults (age 16 and over): On Monday evenings, join expert Ed Dubin at the Chess Club for adults from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Meet with other chess aficionados and enjoy a friendly game or two. On Friday, April 13, the library will once again host the popular Poetry Café at 7 p.m. Local published poet Robert Milby will recite original and favorite poems and emcee the evening with featured poets Barbara Adams and Rhodora Penaranda followed by an open mic hour. Desserts and four flavors of brewed coffees will be available. This program is free and for adults (age 16 and over) only. The Knitting Circle meets the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. This month’s meeting is on April 16. Bring your own needles and yarn and learn a new hobby, or bring along your current project. Master knitter Siw Fritsch will be on hand to teach the basics or help you with your project. Crocheters are welcome, too, Pick up your copy of How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accent by Julia Alvarez now at the library. Read this novel about four sisters and their family learning to become American after fleeing the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. Sign up to join the discussion on Wednesday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m. Take part in a Scrapbooking Extravaganza on Sunday, April 22 at 2 p.m. Bring your own supplies. See what’s new in the scrapping world and exchange ideas. Expert scrapper Suzanne Skeels will guide you in making a beautiful spring page. A special showing of the movie, “The Queen,” will take place on Wednesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. on the big screen. This is an up-close drama of the British royal family after the untimely death of Princess Diana. Refreshments will be provided and we’ll have a short discussion following the movie. Family programs: On Saturday, April 14, poet Robert Milby will be on hand for Sundaes on Saturday at 2 p.m. to help participants write poems about sundaes. There will be ice cream and all the trimmings available to inspire poetry. Make your own sundae and eat it. This is a poetry workshop for all ages. Board meetings: The Board of Trustees of the Florida Public Library meets on the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the library. The public is welcomed and encouraged to attend. The next meeting is on May 7. The Friends of the Florida Public Library meet at the library on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. The Friends help raise funds for the library’s programs and purchases. New members are always welcome.
