Cuddebackville —The Neversink Valley Area Museum concludes its series of artisans explaining their work at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29, with “The Art of Barbershop.” No, not tonsorial, but barbershop harmony, an authentic American form of singing. Northern Comfort, a women’s barbershop quartet, will demonstrate the four parts of barbershop harmony, perform a variety of songs in barbershop style and teach a short “tag” - the embellishment at the end of a barbershop song. The quartet is comprised of four members of the Sweet Adelines International, the largest women’s singing organization in the world. They have been singing together for four years. Gerrie Sylvester, of Middletown, is the lead; Cheryl Treco, of New Windsor, sings baritone; Brenda Crawford, of Godeffroy, is the bass; and Kay Crozier, also of Godeffroy, sings tenor. Between them, the four women possess 95 years of experience singing barbershop harmony. The quartet will also perform at Woodbury Common on four Sunday afternoons before Christmas. “The Art of Barbershop” will be held at the D & H Canal Park Visitor’s Center, 58 Hoag Road, Cuddebackville, just off Route 209. Suggested donation for non-members is $2. The Neversink Valley Area Museum is open from noon to 4 p.m., Thursday to Sunday, April 1 through Oct. 29, and by appointment.
