The Friends of the Arboretum will be offering classes for adults and children at the Arboretum this week, as well as hosting the annual Arbor Day celebration.

Plant your herb garden
On April 23, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Master Gardener Dora Wright will present Part 1 of “Planting an Herb Garden” in the Kosuga classroom.

“Herbs are user-friendly and easy to grow, which makes them any gardener’s best friend,” said Wright.

In the first session, participants will learn which herbs can be planted to use for cooking, teas, bath and body products, crafting, pet care, and much more. Handouts will contain information on different categories of herbs, as well as their light, soil, and water requirements.

In Part 2 of the class, on Aug. 22 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Wright will demonstrate how to harvest and use the various types of herbs. Participants will also receive written instructions and lots of great recipes utilizing all herbs discussed in the class.

A fee of $10 per person covers both parts of the class. Advanced registration and pre-payment are required. Call 845-615-3828 to reserve a seat.

It's Arbor Day
The annual Arbor Day program will be celebrated on Friday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to noon on the grounds of the Orange County Arboretum. This free event will include a demonstration on how to properly plant a tree as well as a guided tour of the greenhouses and the Arboretum gardens highlighting the variety of specimen trees.

Build a fairy garden
The Friends will offer “How to Build a Fairy Garden” on Saturday, April 26, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Kosuga classroom. Volunteers will instruct children ages 5 to 10 on how to plant a container garden with small plants and flowers. These miniature landscapes, complete with tiny paths and seating areas, are sure to enchant children.

All materials will be supplied and kids get to take their creations home. The cost is $10 per child and space is very limited, so advanced registration and pre-payment are required. Call 845-615-3828 to reserve a spot today.
