Annual M-W music faculty recital set for March 3

Central Valley - The annual Monroe-Woodbury music faculty recital, which has been raising funds for the Souza Scholarship for the Performing Arts since 1990, will be held Saturday, March 3, at 7 p.m. in the Monroe-Woodbury High School Auditorium. The event is cosponsored with the Monroe-Woodbury Music Boosters. The Souza Scholarship for the Performing Arts was formed in 1980 to honor the memory of the late Monroe-Woodbury music teacher Robert W. Souza. To date, nearly $200,000 in scholarships has been awarded to promising performing arts students in the M-W school district. In addition to the faculty concert, its fund-raising activities include theatrical presentations, such as the 2005 production of “Seussical, the Musical” and the previous “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” The Monroe-Woodbury Music Boosters was formed in July 1991 to advocate for music education at Monroe-Woodbury. The group established annual music scholarships, which encourage and reward student involvement, musical development, and dedication to the performing arts in the areas of band, chorus and orchestra. The boosters group also has purchased equipment not included in the school district’s budget, such as the acoustic shells in both the high school and middle school auditoriums. Its members also have provided financial assistance to students for competition trips, as well as sponsoring special music-related events, concerts, and learning opportunities in the schools. Tickets for the annual faculty recital at $7 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. They may be purchased in advance at the main office of each district school or at the door on the evening of the event. All proceeds from the Concert will benefit district children through the Souza Scholarship and the Monroe-Woodbury Music Boosters. The snow date is Sunday, March 4, at 3 p.m.
