Allegro Orchestra performs Sunday with renown cellist

Central Valley - The Allegro Orchestra will perform Vivaldi’s Cello Concerto in D Major with cellist Avron Coleman this Sunday, Jan. 13, in Monroe-Woodbury High School. Coleman has played with the New York Philharmonic under Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta and the legendary Leonard Berstein. “I had the good fortune of meeting Avron a little over a year ago and knew immediately that he would be a wonderful guest artist for Allegro students,” said Viktor Prizgintas who conducts the orchestra. “His thoughtful interpretation and playful, appreciative support for our students make this one of those very special unions.” The concerto will also feature Karen Vandenberg on the harpsichord. Jon Huberth will narrate the event. The concert will also feature violist and Allegro alumnus Lauren Niebour. Sunday’s program will feature Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite which incorporates Baroque dance movements. Niebour will demonstrate dance selections from the Baroque period on the viola which will then be contrasted by Grieg’s interpretation of the same dances. The program begins at 3 p.m. and will feature a short pre-show debut of Allegro’s Training Orchestra. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets will be available at the door starting 2:30 p.m. Call 827-6498 for additional information. Samples of some of Allegro’s previous performances can be viewed on YouTube.
