Albert Wisner Public Library hosts film 'Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict' on Oct. 12

WARWICK — On Friday, Oct. 12, at 6:30 p.m. the Albert Wisner Public Library will present the film "Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict" followed by a discussion and poetry reading.
For those who have had the good fortune to visit Peggy Guggenheim's Palazzo in Venice to view her treasure trove of modern art, this film will provide insight into Guggenheim’s life and collecting.
For those who have not been to the Palazzo but love modern art, this film is a must see.
Guggenheim was a patron of the arts extraordinaire who transformed a modest fortune and impeccable taste into one of the premiere collections of twentieth century art.
A colorful character who was not only ahead of her time but helped to define it, Guggenheim was an heiress who became a central figure in the modern art movement.
As she moved through the cultural upheaval of the 20th century, she collected not only art, but artists. Her colorful personal history included such figures as Samuel Beckett, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, Marcel Duchamp as well as countless others.
While fighting through personal tragedy, she maintained her vision to build one of the most important collections of modern art, now enshrined in her Venetian Palazzo.
After the film screening, Laure Byro will lead a discussion and also read from her new volume of poetry, "La Dogaressa," which was inspired by Guggenheim.
Refreshments will be served and an author signing will follow with copies available for purchase.
