Albert Wisner Public Library announces upcoming programs for adults and children
Warwick - In 2007 The Albert Wisner Public Library will celebrate its 80th anniversary. This winter the library will present book discussions of two 20th century classics, both published in 1927, the year the library opened its doors: Thornton Wilder’s “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” and Virginia Woolf’s “To the Lighthouse.” The discussions will be led by former English teacher and Warwick resident, Wendy Dembeck. The discussion of “The Bridge of San Luis Rey” will be presented on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. at the library. Copies of the book will be available at the library on Jan. 4. The discussion of “To the Lighthouse” will be on Sunday, March 25, at 4 p.m. at the Library, copies available Feb. 25. Registration is required for all programs. Register in person at the reference desk or by telephone at 986-1047. Programs are open to all residents of the Warwick Valley School District. Other adult programs: Artists of the Harlem Renaissance - Feb. 3 at the Greenwood Lake Library. Art Historian Susan Tanner Slater will present a lecture and slide presentation of art created in a period after World War I described as the Harlem Renaissance. These works are considered to be a flowering of African American art, literature, music and culture in the United States led primarily by the African American community based in Harlem, New York City. This program is co-sponsored by the Greenwood Lake Library in recognition of Black History Month. The ABCs of Talking to Your Kids About Money - Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. Led by financial educator Daisy Badillo, this workshop will provide information on how parents can lead by example in preparing their children for a successful financial future. Some topics covered include: family budget, credit card pitfalls, life insurance, long-term savings plans. Six do-it-yourself techniques to promote your business & get results - Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. Local marketing consultant and creator of Warwickinfo.net, Peter Lyons Hall, will present this program. He knows that most local entrepreneurs are too busy working to plan a market strategy. From experience he has learned that even if your resources are restricted but you have the ability to think like your best customers, there are six key things that local businesses could be doing. Invest 60 minutes in this program, ask questions and get some real answers. The Joys of Hiking - March 8 at 7 p.m. Within a 25 mile radius of Warwick lies some of the best hiking trails and open forest land within the country. Peter Reiner and Chris Connolly leaders of the Adirondak Mountain Club, Ramapo chapter, will share with participants the many ways to enjoy the beauty of these forests in this area. Topics include: Basic equipment, hiking trails, map reading and areas to explore. Their talk will include a slide presentation showing some of the beauty of various hiking areas in the Hudson Valley. Painted Scarves - March 23 at 7 p.m. Join in for the fun of creating your own hand painted silk scarf with Catina Strauss. No previous art experience is required. There is a $5 charge for materials.
