A walk on the historic side

| 29 Sep 2011 | 10:05

This month’s program by the Monroe Historical Society includes a walking tour of the Mombasha and O’Neill mines. Iron was extracted from the mines until the 1880s, tempered at the furnaces at Arden to make such items as cannon balls used during the Civil War. Following the mine, society members will tour Indian Hill, with its amazing stone walls, some as wide as 28-feet wide, that appear to have been used as roads by long ago residents. The tour begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, and leaves from the Senior Center on Mine Road. For additional information, contact Jim Nelson at 783-3406. (Photos provided by Jim Nelson)
