The Greenwood Lake Public Library begins a Wednesday Craft Night in August in the library’s Youth Study Center (otherwise known as “The YA Room”).

The Youth Study Center was opened and especially designed with kids entering 5th-12th grade in mind. The room is intended to be a safe and fun place to come and hang out, talk quietly, eat snacks, watch a movie or enjoy a board game.

What to expect

At Wednesday’s Summer Crafts in August, participants will come and create from an assortment of items to choose from. They include flower making, bead bracelets, acrylic painting, calendar wreaths, picture frames, wooden bead necklaces and more.

These crafts sessions will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 14 and 28. (Please note: no crafting on Wednesday, Aug. 21).

'Youth Study Center Rules and Agreement'

The Youth Study Center is open to Greenwood Lake residents who are entering 5th grade and have a valid library card.

New participants are asked to fill out a Youth Study Center Rules and Agreement form, which details what is and is not permitted in the room.

Part of the purpose in signing this agreement is to spell out the rules directly to the child and to remind them that they should behave in a responsible and good natured way.

A letter is sent home to the family to confirm registration with the Youth Study Center.

Once registered, they have access to this room (which is always supervised by a library staff member) until the summer after they graduate 12th grade.

A computer policies form is also requested from the parent to confirm that parents give permission for their child to have computer and internet use.

These forms are available at the library.

Other YA Room activities

Other activities in the YA Room include Monthly Bingo, scheduled for the first Tuesday of each month (Aug. 6) and Movie Night on the other Tuesdays of the month.

Some of the films shown in past include "The Lego Movie The Second Part," "The House With a Clock in It’s Wall" and "Hugo."

The Tuesday night activities all begin at 6 p.m.

During the summer, the room opens most days at 1 p.m. (depending of staffing).

Once school begins, the room opens at 3 p.m. during the week and at noon on the weekends.

The room closes a half hour before the library’s closing time each day.
